{} Red list

WireMock{} Red

Proxy + record-replay at scale, fully open-source, no vendor lock-in.

Across 30 days it was the only tool that handled local, proxy, and CI scenarios without a paid tier or a second product. Proxy-and-replay gave us a deterministic offline double of a flaky third party, and file-driven mappings meant zero lock-in. For backend teams it is the safest default, which is why it tops the Red list.

Mockoon{} Red

Fastest local mock we tested — zero setup, click-to-build.

It was the only tool a non-engineer could use to stand up a believable endpoint in under a minute, with no server and no DSL. That speed is exactly what solo devs and frontend spikes need. It misses the deeper CI and proxy features, but for local work nothing else was faster, earning its Red-list spot.

Prism{} Red

Spec-native mock in one command; contract and mock never drift.

Prism turned an existing OpenAPI file into a live mock with a single command, and request validation at the boundary caught contract breaks early. For spec-first teams that zero-drift property is worth more than engine depth. It lacks proxying and rich faults, but the simplicity and free CLI earned it a Red-list place.

Black list

Paywall-only mock services

No free path to evaluate before paying — we could not field-test them fairly.

These were excluded because the field test requires hands-on evaluation, and a paywall before any trial blocked that. We don’t rank tools we can’t run ourselves, however capable they may be. A fair Red/Black list only includes what we actually tested, so opaque paid-only services land on the Black list by method, not by malice.

Tools with broken CI examples

At test time their documented CI snippets failed to run as written.

Several tools shipped quickstart CI snippets that errored on a clean runner — wrong image tags, missing env vars, or stale commands. A mock that can’t boot unattended fails its core CI job, so these went Black. We’d reconsider any that fix the docs, but as written they broke the one scenario that matters most for shared mocks.

Method

{} 30-day recurring field test across local, proxy, and CI scenarios. Independent editorial — no paid placements, recurring affiliate-safe.
